Visas

Most travellers won’t require a visa to enter Mexico. Tourists are entitled to stay in Mexico for up to 180 days visa-free. However, the actual length of your permitted stay is technically determined by the border official.

In recent years, border officials have been cracking down on long-term visitors (seemingly off the back of the pandemic) and are seemingly less likely to award 180 days without justification. Proof of onward travel and sufficient funds to cover your stay may be required.

Currency

Mexican Peso (MXN/$). It exchanges at approximately $22 to GBP, $19 to USD and $19 to the Euro.

Budget

Generally speaking, Mexico is cheaper than most of Europe and the US. The cost of living, i.e., food and transport, is cheap, but we found accommodation to be our biggest expense (much more in line with Europe prices, surprisingly).

Transport

Mexico is a big country. Internal flights are the main way to travel between different regions. Within regions, you’ll need to use a bus company such as ADO or Omnibus de Mexico. Within a city, or between nearby cities, you can also use collectivos – local minibuses. These are incredibly cheap, but they are usually hot and cramped.

Weather

Mexico has a tropical climate, with generally favourable weather all year round. Watch out for the rainy season (May/June to October/November) and be aware that high-elevation areas (such as Mexico City) will be cooler.

Responsible Tourism

Greenwashing, corruption, environmental destruction, unnecessary plastic pollution and cultural appropriation of indigenous peoples are a sad reality in Mexico. Please do your research before joining an excursion, tour or experience and do your bit to safeguard Mexico’s future environment.

Remote Working

Mexico is a popular hub for digital nomads. Mexico City, Playa del Carmen, Guadalajara and Oaxaca are all highly rated digital nomad hotspots. There are a growing number of nomads who flock to Mexico for the good weather and cheap cost of living. Coworking spaces and laptop-friendly cafés are common and wi-fi is usually pretty stable.
